Maintaining an adequate number of nurses can prove a significant challenge for several reasons. First, many younger nurses may not wish to deal exclusively with a bariatric surgery population; much of the general stigmata of obesity spills over onto the unenlightened nursing and paramedical support staff. Second, nurses have been injured (low back, shoulders, etc.) when working with the bariatric population in inadequate facilities, and they fear further injury. Third, the “glamour” of other services and the more attractive work schedules of outpatient units are understandable obstacles to staffing a dedicated bariatric unit.

A dedicated patient floor or ward makes for efficiency in terms of use of the environment and facilities. The mobility of the postoperative bariatric patient requires both knowledge and appropriate facilities to avoid work-related injuries to the staff as well as to the patient. Similarly, working knowledge of sleep apnea and its treatment is important in the care of this population. However, the concept of a dedicated nursing unit, while theoretically ideal for best patient management, also provides a very real challenge for the hospital personnel department.

We have addressed the problem by outfitting more than one patient care area to deal with this patient population, but continue to maintain these floors as general surgical areas. Sompo Holdings and Sompo Care have established Future Care Lab in Japan (“Future Care Lab”), a research facility that will conduct activities such as demonstration trials of cutting-edge technologies from around the world. The Future Care Lab will effectively harness ICT and digital technology and reimagine what people should really be doing when they provide nursing care. In the process, the Future Care Lab will propose new ways of providing nursing care services through collaboration between people and technology. By verifying the reliability and safety of technologies at the Future Care Lab, the Sompo Holdings Group will deploy effective technologies to the nursing care service sites, with the aim of enhancing the quality and productivity of nursing care services.

Management Of The Unit Or Environment Of Care

In the United States today, nursing roles can be divided into three categories by the specific responsibilities they undertake. The HIGN eLearning Center is your portal to courses, webinars, tools and other resources for nurses, physicians, social workers and other members of the interprofessional healthcare team. HIGN advances equitable health care for older adults by educating the workforce and future professionals, informing policy, advancing research, and developing community programs. Family nursing interventions are those that address not only the patient, but other family members as well. They could entail education of family members about caring for the patient; or, in the case of new mothers, interventions could consist of instruction and assistance with breastfeeding and other forms of infant care. 21st Century nursing is the glue that holds a patient’s health care journey together.

Due to the vast range of specialisms and complex skills in the nursing profession, each nurse will have specific strengths, passions, and expertise. The results show that the nurses performance on some nursing activities were below standard (80%). Nursing care plans include the initial patient assessment and diagnosis, the desired outcomes and how to achieve them, and an evaluation of the patient's results. While the names of the individual parts may vary from organization to organization (for example, "implementation" in one plan might be called "intervention" in another), all nursing care plans include these fundamental components.

Many, but not all, nursing care plans include rationales, the reasons for an intervention, while others require them only if there is some reason not to provide the standard intervention. Unlike most electronic health records systems, nursing care plans are designed to address the patient's holistic needs which helps provide a better patient experience. When all members of a care team have access to all the information about a patient's needs and preference, everyone stays on the same page. Although the interventions were properly executed, the mobilization and monitoring activities could be improved. Nurses rarely formulated a nursing diagnosis before the expected outcome; however, these two activities should be performed in order, since it may affect the planned nursing intervention. The nurses did not properly identify the patients’ home needs in discharge planning, nor did they create an optimal nursing activities resumé.
